Summer Swimming Safety
Summer is right around the corner, which for many of us Richmonders means enjoying the warm weather either on the James River, at our local pool or with a quick trip to Virginia Beach. While the activities that come with a beach or pool trip are long awaited and incredibly fun, it is important to exercise safety when in and around the water. According to statistics provided by the CDC and the World Health Organization, drowning is a significant concern for people of all ages, but particularly for children and adolescents. Here are some precautions you can take while at the lake, pool, or beach this summer:
– Only swim in areas supervised by lifeguards
– Do not get in the water if you can’t swim
– Do not get in the water while intoxicated
– Avoid swimming alone
– Know your abilities—if you’re not a strong swimmer stay away from areas with heavy currents
Boating, Jet Skiing, Canoeing, etc.
The more people and equipment involved in a particular aquatic activity, the more room for potential accidents. When going on excursions that involve boating, jet skiing, canoeing, kayaking, or paddle boarding, keep this checklist in mind:
– Always wear a life jacket
– Check the forecast to avoid inclement weather, and start heading back if you notice storm clouds or wind
picking up
– Have a first aid kit, flashlight, and map with you
– Avoid unfamiliar areas, especially at night
– Obey signage
