As you start spring cleaning, take some time to look at safety around your home. Here are some tips to help keep your home safe for your family and visitors.
Indoors:
- Install smoke alarms throughout your home, in places such as:
- Bedrooms
- Outside each separate sleeping area
- Every level of your home, including basement and attic
- Replace smoke detectors every 10 years.
- Replace smoke detector batteries at least once per year.
- Plan escape routes in case of an emergency.
- Do not leave the oven or stove on when you leave the house.
- Extinguish candles and turn off diffusers before leaving the house.
- Keep matches, lighters, knives, and any other dangerous items out of reach of children.
- Keep a first aid kit in an accessible location. Find a list of supplies that should be in a first aid kit according to the American Red Cross.
Outside:
- Keep your yard, driveway, and walkways clear of sticks and debris.
- Avoid climbing trees to remove branches, even if you believe that you can do it. If you see a loose tree branch, contact a tree branch removal service.
- Inspect your trees at least once a year to ensure they do not have any diseases.
- Repair walkways that are cracked or have loose stones and bricks.
- Check decks and patios for loose boards and rotted wood.
