In honor of World Diabetes Day, ReidGoodwin would like to help shed some light on Type 1 Diabetes in hopes that one day we can live in a world without T1D.
What is Type 1 Diabetes or T1D?
T1D is an autoimmune disease in which insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas are mistakenly destroyed by the body’s immune system. T1D seems to have a genetic component and can be diagnosed early in life but also in adulthood. Its causes are not fully known, and there is currently no cure. People with T1D are dependent on injected or pumped insulin to survive. 1
How can we help?
In October, ReidGoodwin aided in sponsorship with the JDRF One Walk, an annual event that we have helped sponsor for the last three years. The JDRF One Walk typically brings in over 3500 people to support in and walk a 5k to raise money and awareness for diabetes research. This year, the Central Virginia chapter had 20 corporate sponsors, 16 corporate walk teams, and over 100 family and school walk teams! Together, our community raised over $362,000 to further research for TID! It was an amazing community event to be involved with and we cannot wait to help out again next year.
Of course, JDRF is always accepting donations. JDRF’s mission is to find a cure for type 1 diabetes (TID) and it’s complications through the support of research. If you or anyone you may know would like to donate to JDRF please click here!! The generosity of others makes real progress possible and propels JDRF toward their goal of a world without T1D.
What is JDRF?
JDRF is leading the fight against type 1 diabetes (T1D) by funding research, advocating for policies that accelerate access to new therapies, and providing a support network for millions of people around the world impacted by T1D.2
A few years ago, the name changed from Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to JDRF for a few reasons:
- To remove the misconception that T1D is only a childhood disease
- To acknowledge that nearly 85 percent of people living with the disease are over age 18
- To reinforce our commitment to funding research that improves life for people at all ages and all stages of the disease
To learn more about JDRF and common misconceptions, FAQs and general diabetes information, you can follow JDRF Central Virginia on Facebook. Throughout November JDRF will be posting all the information you may need to help in support of Diabetes Awareness Month. You can also visit www.JDRF.org to stay updated on research development, facts, events, and much more.
ReidGoodwin, headquartered in Richmond, has a history of community engagement – partnering with the likes of Richmond Animal League (RAL), FeedMore, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), Ronald McDonald House, Safe Harbor, Angel Tree, and more. Now, more than ever, our communities need responsible corporate citizens that give back to their community.
