February 16, 2015- Richmond, VA
Weather forecasters are calling for 6-12 inches of snow across metro-Richmond, beginning as early as 4:00 PM this afternoon.
This projected amount of snowfall may create dangerous road conditions, increasing the likelihood of roadway accidents. Icy, snowy conditions make it more difficult to see, to brake in a timely manner or to suddenly change direction if necessary. And while it is possible to take every personal precaution while driving in bad conditions, it is impossible to control or predict the behavior of other drivers.
Of course, the best way to avoid accidents on icy or snow-covered roads is to simply avoid the roadway altogether. However, there may be times where you may have no other option. If that is the case, here are some important tips to remember:
- When approaching a stop sign or traffic signal, begin the process of gently braking in advance – suddenly slamming on the brakes is unlikely to successfully bring your car to a stop.
- Anti-lock brakes often do not work well on ice and snow and may lock up, resulting in loss of vehicle control. If your wheels begin to lock up, ease off the brake, then lightly resume braking until traction improves.
- While it may seem counter-intuitive, it is best to turn into an uncontrolled slide, rather than trying to overcorrect in the opposite direction. Overcorrection may cause your vehicle to fishtail wildly and worsen your uncontrolled slide.
- Stopping to help another stranded vehicle may actually cause more problems than it solves. You may become stuck yourself, or contribute to residual accidents involving drivers who may not be able to see your vehicle. If it is safe to do so, use a hands-free device to alert emergency personnel to the location of the stranded vehicle – but keep moving!
