For reasons unknown, the driver of a silver Toyota collided the Panera Bread restaurant on South Park Boulevard Tuesday afternoon, shattering a huge glass window.
While none of the restaurant patrons were injured as a result, ABC 8 News reports that the 70-year-old driver was airlifted to a local hospital with serious injuries.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 5,560 older adults were killed and more than 214,000 were injured in motor vehicle crashes in 2012. In other words, 15 older adults were killed and 586 were injured in crashes on average every day during that year.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has determined that while older drivers have low rates of police-reported crash involvements per capita; their per capita fatal crash rates begin to increase at age 70. Per mile traveled, crash rates and fatal crash rates also start increasing at about age 70.
