When driving, there are different safety precautions to take depending on where you’re going. Your destination might be routine, such as your commute to work, or you might be going on a trip out of town and need to jump on the highway. Even though you’re in the same vehicle, you are faced with different driving scenarios to get to your destination.
Road Driving
Many people feel more comfortable driving at lower speeds within their city. However, they still need to be cautious and aware of their surroundings. Arguably, road driving requires more focus. You need to watch out for pedestrians, crossing lanes, stop signs, changes in speed limits, traffic signs, and more. Just because you’re driving at a slower speed or know exactly where you’re going, does not mean that driving on the road is any less dangerous. Rather, you have different precautions to take and different things to avoid.
Highway Driving
Highway driving is very different from road driving. You are usually traveling at a faster, more constant speed. While the things you need to focus on may be different when driving on the highway, you still need to focus on driving safely and be extra careful because of your speed.
Additionally, highways have different rules. If you want to drive at a slower speed, you need to drive in the right line. If you are comfortable driving at the suggested speed limit, you should stick to the left side of the highway. Roads off the highway do not have these rules. With the faster flow of traffic, you may see more lane merging and need to stay aware of those changes in the traffic pattern.
Things to Always Remember
No matter the destination, remember that in getting behind the wheel, you have a responsibility to the people around you on the road, to yourself and any passengers. Whenever you drive, have your phone stored away, remain focused, and limit any potential distractions. This rings true for any destination-whether a routine trip in town or an out of town adventure.
