Henrico Police have identified Anwar S. Edwards as the man killed while driving his motorcycle on Thursday night.
According to NBC12, Mr. Edwards was riding east on his Harley-Davidson toward the intersection on Charles City Road near Poplar Spring Road at the same time as a car was approaching southbound. The car stopped at the intersection before pulling onto Charles City Road, directly into the path of Mr. Edwards’ motorcycle.
In an attempt to avoid the collision, Mr. Edwards turned to the right, but sideswiped the right side of the car, ran off the right side of the road and hit a tree head-on. Mr. Edwards died at the scene.
By their very design, motorcycles are one of the least crashworthy vehicles on the road. According to the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles, motorcyclists represented 8.5% of traffic fatalities in 2013, despite only representing 1.7% of all traffic accidents that year.
For the loved ones of motorcyclists killed in traffic accidents, the emotional and financial chaos that results may feel insurmountable. In Virginia, drivers who negligently cause the death of another may be liable for wrongful death compensation.
Virginia law allows for the awarding of damages for sorrow, mental anguish, and solace; compensation for reasonably expected loss of income of the decedent; expenses for the care, treatment, hospitalization of the decedent; reasonable funeral expenses; and punitive damages for willful or wanton misconduct.
